Measuring Back To Welcome Page
The measure tool allows you to measure distances and areas on the map canvas. It can also be used to identify the XY coordinates of a particular point on the map.
- Click the Measure button on the toolbar to open the Measure tool dialogue.
- Click on the line tool
to measure a linear distance on the map. The cursor becomes a crosshair.
- Click on the map canvas where you want to begin your measurement. Double-click where you would like to finish it.
- The Measure tool dialogue displays the length of the line in kilometres by default. To change the units, choose from the units drop-down field.
- Line measurements can be carried out in segments. Finish each segment by clicking once, and its length is displayed beside 'Segment' on the dialogue. The total length of all segments together is displayed beside 'Total Length' on the dialogue. Double-click to finish.

- Click on the polygon tool
to measure an area on the map. The cursor becomes a crosshair.
- Click on the map canvas where you want to begin your area measurement. A polygon requires at least three vertices but can have as many after that as required. Double-click where you would like to finish the polygon.
- The Measure tool displays the area of the polygon in hectares by default. To change the units, choose from the units drop-down field. Also displayed is the perimeter length for the whole polygon area in kilometres by default.

- Click the Measure button on the toolbar to open the Measure tool dialogue.
- Click on the point tool
to measure the XY coordinate of a point on the map. The pointer becomes a crosshair.
- Click on the map canvas where you want to measure the XY coordinate.
- The measure tool displays the XY coordinate of the point clicked (i.e. easting, northing).

- Removing Measurements: To remove any measurement lines, polygons or points from the map canvas, simply close the measurement dialogue.
