Table of Contents Back to Welcome Page
The table of contents is the column on the left of the map canvas that displays the name and symbology of each layer that is present on the map canvas. Every time a user adds a layer to the map, it will be added to the Table of Contents as well as being drawn on the map canvas.
Appearance of TOC on first entry to the Map Viewer - only Basemap layers are present:

You can switch a layer on and off on the map by clicking on the tick box beside the layer in the table of contents. If this is not ticked then it will not be drawn on the map.
To view the current symbology of a layer click on the small plus on the far left side of it, in order to display how it is currently being drawn on the map.
If a layer in the TOC is greyed out, it means that it is not visible at the current scale. To make the layer visible you can right click on the layer to open a context menu:

This contains some useful tools
- Edit Symbology - used to change the way the layer is drawn on the map canvas.
- Zoom to Layer - this will zoom the map to the extent of the layer (which could be, for example, all of Northern Ireland or just the extent of an area like Belfast, depending on the data).
- Zoom to Make Visible - this will zoom the map to the first scale at which the particular layer is visible.
- Remove Layer - this allows you to remove a layer completely from the map canvas. If you remove a basemap layer this can be retrieved by using the New Map Definition tool which creates a new blank map canvas for the user containing all the original basemap layers.
