Historical Administrative Boundaries

Although they no longer have any administrative function, Townlands were the smallest administrative units in Ireland. Streams or old roads often formed the boundaries of Townlands. They vary in size from less than an acre to well over 2,000 acres. There are approximately 9,000 Townlands in NI, and amalgams of between 5 and 30 were grouped together to form a Parish. These in turn were grouped together to form Counties. As with Townlands, both Parishes and Counties no longer have any administrative function within NI.

Modern Administrative Boundaries

The series of paper Administrative Boundary Maps consists of a range of 126 various maps between 1:10 000 and 1:500 000 scale, covering both Local Government and Parliamentary boundaries and a covering a range of reviews from 1974 to 1995. They depict the following administrative units of government:

  • Electoral Ward

The smallest administrative unit in NI. Electoral Ward boundaries are determined by the Local Government Boundaries Commissioner, and reviewed every 8-10 years

  • District Electoral Area (DEA)

These are amalgams of 5, 6, or 7 wards, and are used for the election of councilors in Proportional Representation elections. Their boundaries are determined by the District Electoral Areas Commissioner, and reviewed every 8-10 years

  • Local Government District (LGD)

These are amalgams of DEAs and are the unit for local government in NI. Their boundaries are determined by the Local Government Boundaries Commissioner, and are reviewed every 8-10 years

  • Parliamentary Constituency (PC)

Parliamentary Constituencies are amalgams of the local government ward. Their boundaries are reviewed every 8-12 years by the Parliamentary Boundary Commission.
