Distance and Area Measurement Tool
A distance and area measurement tool is available on this website. To access this you must log in to the map store (by clicking the Map Store link at top of page). Click the 'Digital Measurement' link and choose either 'distance' or 'area' from the panel below the address search.
Alternative Distance Measurement Tool
If the map console cannot accommodate the distance you would like to measure (due to loss of detail as you zoom out) we have included an alternative distance measurement tool for your convenience. The instructions on how to use this alternative method are below:
1. Access map console by entering 'Map Store'
2. Click on Map Console icon (bottom left of page)
3. Do Address Search for your school
4. Zoom to school
5. Click on map
6. Move Arrow to centre of school
7. Record Easting and Northing of school, to be found on bottom left corner of web page (round up to nearest 6 figure coordinate)
8. Do address search for each house you want to calculate a straight line distance for
9. Record Easting and Northing
10. Open spreadsheet ‘Distance Measurement tool’ (link is below).
11. Enter your school name and Easting and Northing (replacing Colby House and its Easting and Northing). The distances will all change because of the coordinate change.
12. There are a couple of sample addresses which you can overwrite if you wish
13. Enter each address and its Easting and Northing and the straight line distance will be calculated (there are already large distances up to row 30, as the formula assumes that the Easting is 0 and the Northing is 0 and calculates the distance from your school to the origin of the Irish Grid i.e. Easting=0 and Northing=0. As you input your new Eastings and Northings, the formula will recalculate the correct distance)
